Claude SEO: Practitioner's Guide (2026)

How StudioHawk uses Claude for SEO across 1,000+ Australian client audits. Skills, Claude Code, MCPs, the operating stack, and when not to use it.

"Should I be using Claude for SEO"? is the question we get asked most right now. Short answer: yes, if you use it right. Long answer, this is what we'll cover:

TL;DR

  • Claude SEO is the practice of running your repeatable SEO workflows inside Claude, either as chat prompts, saved Skills, or automated jobs in Claude Code. The advantage is repeatability, not raw intelligence.

  • The three SEO pillars (technical, content, links) each have a Claude entry point. Technical audits and content design are the fastest wins. Link building stays mostly human.

  • StudioHawk runs a 15-tool operating stack around Claude as the workflow layer. The moat is the connections between tools, not any single tool.

Answering the Questions Before You Scroll: What Is Claude SEO?

Claude SEO is the practice of moving your repeatable SEO tasks into Claude. That includes chat prompts, saved Skills that reload the same instructions every time, and Claude Code CLI jobs that run against your data on a schedule.

The point is not that Claude is smarter than the SEO manager. It is that once a workflow lives inside Claude, it runs the same way every time, ships faster, and scales past what a solo practitioner can do. Repeatability is the wedge.

We started running Claude across StudioHawk client work in 2025. Twelve months in we run more than a hundred discrete SEO Skills across audits, keyword research, content design, internal linking, and competitive analysis. The article below is the version of "what we would tell a new hire who has Claude open on Monday morning" that we can share publicly.

Why Agencies Are Moving SEO Workflows Into Claude

Three reasons, ranked by how much they actually matter.

  1. Repeatability. A prompt is a snowflake. A skill is a document. If you save an SEO audit as a Skill, every future run uses the same framework, the same checkpoints, and the same output format. That means new team members ship agency-grade work in week one instead of month six.

  2. Speed on the boring 80%. Content audits, keyword grouping, internal link suggestion, schema generation, and page-level info-gain analysis were tasks that used to take a good junior a full day each. In Claude Code with the right Skill and the right MCPs plugged in, the same tasks run in minutes and free the practitioner up for the 20% that actually needs a human brain.

  3. Structured data access. Claude Code plugs into Model Context Protocol (MCP) servers for Google Search Console, Bing Webmaster, Cloudflare, DataForSEO, SEOtesting, and dozens of others. That means the workflow can pull real data, act on it, and write results back. Not "here's a suggestion based on training data." Actual SERP, actual rank, actual bot crawl.

What Claude does NOT replace: the strategy call with the client. The judgement of whether a keyword is worth chasing. The human who tells the C-suite what to do next. The reader who catches the one detail an audit missed. Claude is the workflow layer. The practitioner is still the practitioner.

The Three Pillars of SEO and Where Claude Fits Each

We think about every SEO campaign in three pillars: technical, content, and links. Claude has a different role in each.

Technical SEO: Claude wins on scale

Technical audits are pattern recognition against a known checklist. That is exactly what Claude is good at. We run technical audit Skills that check indexation, canonicals, hreflang, structured data, Core Web Vitals, internal link topology, and orphan pages. The Skill produces a scored report and a prioritised action list.

The catch: the audit is only as good as the crawler feeding it. We plug Claude into SiteOne Crawler (a free Screaming Frog alternative), DataForSEO's on-page endpoints, and the Google Search Console MCP. Claude reads the outputs and translates them into a report the client can action.

Content SEO: Claude wins on structure, humans win on voice

Content design is where Claude earns its keep. Given a target keyword, competitor content, and a brand voice profile, Claude will output a heading skeleton, passage architecture, information-gain placement, and visual specs. That is the skeleton a human writer fills.

Voice is a different question. We do not have Claude write final drafts in an agency voice. We have Claude produce the structure and the research; the writer produces the words. The StudioHawk brand voice Skills we run internally exists for this exact reason: to hold the voice rules and structural conventions so the output stays on-brand.

Link building: Claude helps around the edges

Link building is human. Journalists respond to human pitches, not AI outreach. What Claude does well: preparing the outreach list, building the story angles, drafting the initial pitch that a human then rewrites, and tracking placements. The outreach itself stays with the digital PR team.

Claude Skills, Claude Code, and MCPs, Explained

Three overlapping terms. Here is the plain-English version.

  1. Claude Skills. A Skill is a saved workflow. It lives as a Markdown file with a description and instructions. When you type a trigger phrase, Claude loads the Skill's instructions and follows them. Think of a Skill as a runbook you can invoke by name. Skills work in Claude Desktop and in Claude Code.

  2. Claude Code. Claude Code is the CLI (command line interface) version of Claude. It runs in your terminal, can read and write files on your machine, and can execute scripts. Skills work here too. The advantage over the chat app is that Claude Code can act on real files, run scheduled jobs, and integrate with git, GitHub Actions, and any tool you can shell out to.
  3. MCP (Model Context Protocol). MCP is the open standard that lets Claude connect to external data sources. Each MCP is a server that exposes tools Claude can call. There are MCPs for Google Search Console, Bing Webmaster, Cloudflare, DataForSEO, SEOtesting, Ahrefs, Perplexity, and hundreds of others. When you connect an MCP to Claude Code, the Skill can pull real data instead of guessing.

The three fit together like this: Skills are the instructions, Claude Code is the runtime, and MCPs are the data connectors. Get all three right and you have an SEO workflow that runs itself. For the full MCP setup walkthrough, see our companion guide on Claude Code for SEO.

The StudioHawk Operating Stack

The full picture is a hub and spoke: SEO strategy at the centre, fifteen tools radiating off it. The workflow-layer tools (Claude Code, Gemini, GitHub, DataForSEO) operate everything else in the stack.

Screenshot 2026-08-17 at 2.46.01 pm

The full stack. Fifteen tools, one strategy. Every node feeds the centre and feeds the tools next to it.

The workflow-layer four are the runtime. Claude Code executes the Skills. Gemini handles content editing in Google Workspace and AI Mode citation testing. GitHub holds the Skills repo and the scheduled Actions. DataForSEO is the data spine.

Below that sit the four measurement layers: rankings (Google Search Console, SEO Gets, SE Ranking), AI citations (Bing Webmaster, Cloudflare, PEEC.ai, direct prompt research), engagement (GA4, Microsoft Clarity), and test (SEOtesting). SiteOne Crawler is the technical foundation.

When Claude Wins and When It Does Not

The honest version.

Claude wins on:

  • Audits against a known checklist. Technical SEO, on-page audits, schema, internal linking.

  • Repeatable analysis. Content gap analysis, striking-distance keyword identification, cannibalisation checks.
  • First drafts of structured content. Briefs, outlines, product descriptions at scale.
  • Data translation. Turning raw GSC exports, Cloudflare logs, and SEOtesting output into a client-ready summary.
  • Any workflow you already do more than five times a month.

Claude does not win on:

  • One-off strategic decisions. Should we launch a new content hub? Human call.

  • Brand voice. Claude writes in a competent generic tone by default. Getting real brand voice requires substantial upfront work on the Skill and a human editor at the end.
  • Anything that requires trust with a person. Journalist outreach, C-suite conversations, sales handovers.
  • Novel information. Claude's training data cuts off at a point. If the topic is recent, Claude has nothing unique to say without you handing it fresh data.

We say this to every client: Claude is not a strategy consultant. It is a workflow accelerator. The strategy stays with the SEO lead.

"We tell clients the honest version. Claude will not make your SEO better on its own. What it will do is make our team faster on the mechanical work, which frees us up to spend more time on the strategic calls that actually move the number. If your agency is selling you 'AI-powered SEO' without a real operating stack behind it, they are selling you a chat window." - Harry Sanders, Founder, StudioHawk.

Where to Start: Pre-Built Skills Verus Building Your Own

Two paths in.

  1. Pre-built: grab existing Skills from a repository and install them. Hawk Academy publishes a skills library at hawkacademy.co/claude-seo-skills covering audits, keyword research, content briefs, and internal linking. Pre-built Skills are the fastest way to see what Claude can do. They also serve as templates for your own.

  2. Build your own: write a Markdown file with a description and instructions. Save it in ~/.claude/skills//SKILL.md. Restart Claude. The Skill is available. The steep part is not the syntax, it is knowing what to put in the instructions. A Skill that reads "audit this page" gets you nothing. A Skill that specifies the checklist, the output format, the tools to call, and the escalation rules gets you a repeatable report.

The right answer for most SEO managers: start with pre-built Skills, learn what makes them work, then modify them for your context. Building from scratch is the wrong first step.

FAQ

Can Claude do SEO?

Yes. Claude can run technical audits, keyword research, content design, internal linking analysis, schema generation, and first drafts. What it cannot do is replace the strategy, the judgement calls, or the human relationships. Claude does the mechanical work; the practitioner directs it. Across StudioHawk's client base, SEO with Claude means faster delivery on the repeatable 80 percent of the work, not a robot running the campaign.

Is Claude SEO the same as GEO or AI SEO?

No. GEO (Generative Engine Optimisation) and AI SEO are terms for optimising your content to be cited by AI search engines like ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Mode. Claude SEO is about using Claude as a workflow tool to do SEO work faster and more consistently. You can absolutely use Claude to help with your AI search visibility strategy, but the terms are not interchangeable.

Do I need Claude Code or is the chat app enough?

The chat app is fine for exploring. Once you find yourself running the same prompt more than five times, save it as a Skill. Once your Skills need to touch real files, run on a schedule, or pull data from tools like Google Search Console, you need Claude Code. Most agency workflows land in Claude Code within a few weeks.

How much does it cost to run Claude for SEO at agency scale?

The Claude subscription itself is minor compared to what most agencies spend on SEO tools. The bigger costs are usually the MCP data sources (DataForSEO, SEOtesting, Ahrefs) that you plug Claude into. Those you would be paying for regardless. What Claude adds is compute time on top of your existing tool stack.

Can Claude replace my SEO agency?

No. Claude replaces the mechanical parts of SEO work. The strategy, the client relationship, the judgement calls, and the outreach still need humans. What Claude changes is the ratio: an agency running Claude well can serve more clients per practitioner without dropping quality. The client-facing work stays with the humans.

What if I do not know how to code?

You do not need to. Claude Skills are Markdown files with English instructions. Claude Code has a Setup Wizard for MCP connections. The only technical requirement is the ability to install an app and follow instructions. If you can set up a Slack integration, you can set up Claude Code.

Where should I actually start on Monday morning?

Pick one SEO task you do every week. Save your current prompt as a Skill. Run it against three real client tasks. Refine the Skill based on where it went wrong. Repeat with the next task. In a month you have five reliable Skills and a saved-time compound.
